MY JOURNEY TO BADMINTONSKILLS BY MARCUS ELLIS

If you’d told me 20 years ago that one day I’d be helping to shape a global badminton training platform, I’m not sure I’d have believed you. But looking back now, it feels like a natural next step—a chance to pass on what I’ve learned and help more players fall in love with the game the same way I did.

Where it all started

I picked up a racket for the first time when I was about 7 years old. Like a lot of kids, I tried a bit of everything—football, cricket, tennis—but there was something about badminton that clicked straight away. I loved the speed, the sharpness, the one-on-one battles. By the time I was 10, I was training seriously and competing regularly.

I grew up in Huddersfield, and while I didn’t come from a ‘badminton family’ as such, I had great support around me. My parents drove me all over the country for tournaments. The sacrifices they made are a big part of the reason I made it to the top level.

The ups, the setbacks, the medals

Like any career in elite sport, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. I spent years working through the ranks, playing national age-group events, European circuits, and eventually joining the GB setup in Milton Keynes. I had my fair share of injuries, tough losses, and selection setbacks—but I never stopped loving the process of improving.

The turning point came when I focused more on doubles and formed a partnership with Chris Langridge. That led to what’s still one of the proudest moments of my life—winning a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics. It wasn’t just the result; it was everything behind it. The years of graft, the knockbacks, the trust in the process. Standing on that podium made it all worth it.

Since then, I’ve gone on to win medals at the Commonwealth Games, European Championships, and World Tour events. I’ve also had the chance to play in some of the world’s biggest arenas, against the very best.

Why BadmintonSkills?

I’ve always believed that badminton deserves a bigger platform. It’s one of the most exciting, physically demanding sports out there—but access to top-level coaching and structured training still isn’t easy for most players. That’s what drew me to BadmintonSkills.

This platform is about democratising access to high-quality coaching—wherever you are in the world, whatever level you’re at. Whether you’re playing in your local hall twice a week, chasing national titles, or just starting out, we want to give you the tools to get better.

I’ve learned a lot over the past two decades—about training, mindset, recovery, partnerships, pressure—and I’m excited to share that knowledge in a way that’s actually useful. We’re not trying to replicate a one-size-fits-all coaching manual. We’re building something flexible, modern, and built around how people actually learn and improve.

What’s next

Badminton has given me so much, and being part of BadmintonSkills is a way of giving something back. I’ll be sharing drills, insights, tactics, and lessons I’ve picked up along the way—sometimes from winning, sometimes from losing.

Ultimately, I just want more people to enjoy this sport as much as I have. And if something we share helps you win a key point, move a little better, or just feel more confident on court, then that’s job done.

Thanks for being part of the journey—we’re only just getting started.
